Summary

A Chest Upgrade raises a chest that is already placed to the next tier without touching what is inside. Upgrading by crafting means breaking the chest, taking everything out, crafting the new one and sorting it all back in; the upgrade does the same in one click.

Quick example: an iron chest is full of ore. Hold Shift and right-click it with the Chest Upgrade: Iron → Silver. A silver chest now stands in its place, all the ore is in the same slots, and an empty row has appeared at the bottom.

There are five steps, each with its own item:

How to use

• Shift+right-click a chest of the matching tier with the upgrade. Without Shift the chest simply opens.
• What is kept: every item in its own slot, the anvil name, the facing, waterlogging and the lock. The new slots are added as empty rows at the bottom.
• A double chest is upgraded whole: both halves at once, and the pair stays together. This takes two upgrades in your hand. With only one, "A double chest needs 2 upgrades" appears above the hotbar and nothing changes.
• A vanilla copper chest at any oxidation stage, waxed included, becomes an iron one. If its loot has not been generated yet (a chest from a structure), the loot is first rolled into it on your behalf, as when you open it, and moves into the iron chest along with everything else.
• If someone is looking into the chest, their window closes, and the item on their cursor goes back into their inventory.
• Hoppers, pipes and comparators keep working, now with the new, bigger chest.
• Refusal: the wrong tier, the wrong block, a Shielding Chest, someone else's protected region, or a single upgrade on a double chest. You get a message above the hotbar and a quiet sound, and the upgrade stays in your hand.
• No downgrades: the tier only goes up.
• Creative mode: the upgrade is not used up.
• The upgrade comes with a lid bounce, sparks of the new tier's metal and its own sound (subtitle "Chest upgraded").

Your first upgrade grants the advancement "No Repacking".

Recipe

Eight pieces of the target tier's metal around a stick. That is exactly as much metal as the crafting upgrade of the same chest takes:
